Suspension Yoga and Aerial Yoga are very different at the core.
Though Suspension Yoga includes aerial yoga poses in its repertoire, it was ultimately developed for the purpose of spinal care and therapeutic balancing of the body. The suspension-based techniques are fused with classic yoga asana to accelerate the creation of space in a gentle and supportive manner. Often the ground is used for leverage in different positions. Aerial Yoga stems from aerial dance and circus arts. It is mainly an aerial practice, though some teachers do infuse their own style.
The equipment is very different between Suspension and Aerial Yoga, making the available movements very different. Aerial Yoga uses one hammock made with slightly stretchy material. Suspension Yoga uses a cushion-enhanced adjustable sling made of parachute material, with 6 multi-tiered handles to help modify and enhance the movements. The handles and cushioned support offer a much greater variety of motion, as well as a more comfortable and therapeutic experience that is supportive of the uniqueness of each practitioner.
Is Suspension Yoga different from Aerial Yoga?

OmGym has led the evolution of Suspension Yoga for over a decade.
In 2005, Sarah Kellett theorized the concepts of Suspension Yoga, and it’s anatomical impact. In 2006, OmGym was born as a platform for sharing Suspension Yoga, which was a completely foreign concept at that time. Since then, OmGym has given over 16,000 one-on-one sessions, countless group classes, and has labored to bring original, yet scientifically congruent information. Everything presented in this training is from the heart of authentic discovery, innovation, and intensive research.
Today, we provide the only internationally-recognized Suspension Yoga Instructor Certification program and strive to make the great benefits of yoga easily accessible for all levels in different types of classes. We at OmGym invite you to join our growing community of Suspension Yoga professionals.
